Hi All,

Happy March! Spring is hopefully coming our way - although the weather in the city has been a little all over the place. I celebrated my 21st recently, and it has been nice to be able to go out to some new restaurants without having to worry about freezing. It also means that spring break is coming up (next week!) which I am really excited about. I love all my classes, but this break could not come at a better time.

Speaking of classes, I wanted to use this post to highlight an important part of the health sciences curriculum - the public health core. The Health Sciences degree has a lot of room to take your traditional sciences (such as chemistry and biology), but it also has an integrated core of public health classes (such as the American health care system and health policy). I am taking one of those classes this semester, called communication skills for the healthcare professional. This is a small, discussion-based class where you look at the intersection of the field of health communication and it's clinical/healthcare applications. This can look like examining communication styles, looking at the impact culture can have on patient-clinician encounters, and even participating in a SIM lab experience. The SIM lab is in the health sciences building, and it serves as a space where students can be in a realistic healthcare setting, which includes patient actors, a hospital room, and more. It's a space where you can be exposed to difficult situations without the high stakes. What happens in SIM lab stays in SIM lab, so I can't talk about my specific experience, but I was able to put some of the skills we learnt about in class into use. Lastly, my professor Dr. Glowacki, is someone I have had before, and she is amazing! I would highly recommend taking the class with her, or any class in general.

Until next time,

Marcie :)
